Review: Your Demise – Ignorance Never Dies

December 26, 2009

Check out my review of the hardcore punks latest album over at OneMetal.com!

As of late the newly thriving UK punk scene has been heading in a different, heavier direction. Along with the anarchic lyrics and careless abandon for any noticeable melody, UK punk has also been injected with a high dosage of metal. This can be heard in the latest offerings from Blackhole, The Plight and the St. Alban quintet Your Demise…

We All Raged Together

December 21, 2009

It happened, it bloody well happened didn’t it! Rage Against The Machine made it the Christmas number one spot in the UK and beat the sodding X Factor for the first time in five years. Since joining the group on Facebook a few weeks ago I thought it was just going to be another group that tries to achieve something but none of the group members actually do anything about it – this though was different. Live Review: Alestorm At Nottingham Rock City

December 12, 2009

The review has just been published over at OneMetal.com, check it out!

If you accidentally strolled into the basement of Nottingham’s Rock City you could be forgiven for thinking you’d stumbled upon an amateur production of Pirates of the Caribbean. Swords and feathery hats aplenty, it was a dedicated fanbase that tonight’s headliners have amassed. Before the innovators of “True Scottish Pirate Metal” took to the stage, melodic metallers Eden’s Curse had the job of warming up the surly seadogs.

An Idea For iTunes

December 7, 2009

This Thursday I will be driving the 45 minutes needed to get to Nottingham’s Rock City. Headlining the show will be those Scottish metal pirates Alestorm, supported by The Rotted and Eden’s Curse. However I have never heard anything by these bands at all so I checked them out on Spotify just so I knew what I was getting myself into. Why go to the gig if you don’t know the bands I hear you ask, because it’s for the particularly wonderful website OneMetal. Anyway, on to the idea! Read the rest of this entry »

Playlist: December 2009

December 6, 2009

Not even remotely Christmassy this playlist. I’m not ashamed by it. Admittedly it could very well have been a festive playlist of an ironic playlist with songs such as Fuck Christmas by Fear. However it’s not. It’s just some nice juicy tunes to get your teeth into, yum yum!

Click here: Music On The Mind – December 2009

If you haven’t yet joined the musical revolution and downloaded Spotify, boogy on over here:

It does now require an invite though if you’re planning on using the free version. I suggest harassing friends until you get one.

Guest Review: Lostprophets Live At The Engine Shed

November 30, 2009

For what is a first for Music On The Mind, we have a guest review from Calum Fuller! It’s top-notch stuff.

It’s been a full four years since Lostprophets last released an album. You would be forgiven for thinking that they will have fallen off the country’s musical radar as a result of such an unseemly gap in their output. They haven’t, though. They’ve stuck around, and with the repeatedly delayed album The Betrayed seemingly imminent, I was intrigued to see how the 5-piece had evolved in that time. By happy accident, it turned out to be their last gig of the decade, something which provided singer Ian Watkins and guitarist Lee Gaze plenty of comic relief. Read the rest of this entry »

A Look At U2 And Their Glasto Headlining

November 23, 2009

If you hadn’t already checked Pitchfork or NME today then you’ll be blissfully unaware that U2 are headlining next year’s Glastonbury festival. I’m going to make it known early on in this piece that I fucking hate U2. I have nothing positive to say about them at all. They don’t evoke any emotion in me at all other than the desire to take a sledgehammer to my stereo. Admittedly it is mainly Bono himself who annoys me; sneakily walking between the shadows of God and Bob Geldof, poking his head out whenever there’s a disaster or an appeal he hasn’t yet lent his name to. A Good Cover? You’re Kidding!

November 19, 2009

It’s not often that cover versions of songs actually excite me, let alone creep their way up my Top 25 Most Played on iTunes – but this one is different. Breed 77 have recently released their politically-tinged LP Insects which includes as the last track a cover of Zombie by The Cranberries. Read the rest of this entry »

Unsung Heroes Of 70s Punk

November 17, 2009

I was sat around the other day spinning various records and I decided to put on the No Thanks! The 70s Punk Rebellion box set as I hadn’t listened to it all the way through and I’ve had it for over a year. There’s some obvious mentions in there; The Adverts – Gary Gilmore’s Eyes, New York Dolls – Personality Crisis and Ramones – Blitzkrieg Bop to name a few. However once I reached disc two I discovered a fantastic song by seemingly unsung heroes of the 70s punk movement, the song is called First Time and is by The Boys. Read the rest of this entry »

The Spotify Top Spot-Check

November 16, 2009

A few weeks ago, a friend and I were sat at his house before heading out to the pub to watch the football. After a few beers and listening to some music our attention turned to Spotify, and more importantly the Top Hits section. For those of you who don’t have Spotify; a) you have lost the game and b) it’s the top 5 most played tracks by a particular artist. Read the rest of this entry »
