Ten years ago today the infamous nu-metallers Slipknot released their self-titled debut and changed the face of metal music forever. As well as selling millions of copies and reaching double-platinum status, the album created a worldwide movement of ‘maggots’ who are still present today.
Arguably Slipknot’s best album, it contains some of the most ferocious and brutal metal which are still crowdpleasers at your local rock club. Tracks such as Wait And Bleed, Eyeless and Spit It Out are now synonymous with metal and sit proudly on any metallers iPod.

I really didn’t want to write a piece on Michael Jackson’s passing, not that I have any negative feelings toward him I just didn’t want to publish something which is everywhere at the minute and just get sucked into the vacuum of the internet. However because this news story is everywhere I felt I should put something up here anyway.
As I’m sure you’re all aware Michael Jackson died on Thursday of a suspected heart attack. Currently there is no official statement on the cause of death, but coroners have ruled out foul play. There are still a number of tests to be run to fully be sure how Jacko died, but his body has now been released to his family – there are no words on a funeral just yet. Read the rest of this entry »

So here’s the plan; to combat the complaints of artists going mainstream and therefore losing their die hard fans due to ’selling out’, a whole new music chart is going to be launched so underground artists can still claim to be number one in the charts. Sounds simple, but will it be effective?
Later this month two new record charts will be launched (an album chart and a single chart) but is only eligible to artists who have never made the top 20 and are not signed to the four major labels – Sony, Warner, Universal and EMI. Read the rest of this entry »

Walking into the new layout of Download at 10am was an interesting sight, watching all the eager ones run toward the front whilst the more aged fans setting up their chairs toward the back with a cup of Tuborg in hand. Opening the main stage was Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens (***) who brought some great rock ‘n’ roll to Donington with his wailing voice and very impressive backing band. However it was obvious not enough people knew the songs to make the experience more worthwhile.

Metal often gets a bad rap from anyone who doesn’t listen to it, with the usual “all it is is screaming” or “what is this crap?” comments usually spouting from their mouths during the first few seconds of the song. These comments usually come from people who a) don’t listen to metal and usually b) people who tend not to listen to rock music at all. But why?
Yes, there are certain metal bands whose vocals focus heavily on screaming rather than singing – but so what? It is their choice of showing emotion in their song, rather than singing it. It’s exactly asking why hip-hip artists rap, because they want to. Screaming in itself is somewhat of a talent, it’s not easy to keep it going for any notable length of time. A live show can last an hour or longer, and I bet most people couldn’t keep up the strain on their voice for that long. So why the sly remarks toward the music? I don’t complain about a whole genre being awful, I’ll point out if I don’t like a song but not that the whole scene is a big pile. Read the rest of this entry »

Jimi Hendrix’s former roadie James Wright has just released a book entitled ‘Rock Roadie’, in which it describes in detail a conversation between himself and Hendrix’s manager Michael Jeffrey.
In the book Wright claims that Jeffrey gave Hendrix both pills and alcohol in order to kill him and ultimately claim on his life insurance. Jeffrey was allegedly worried that Hendrix was going to fire him, he had also recently taken out a life insurance policy worth $2 million with himself as the beneficiary.
